My third and last novel. 190 pages bound manuscript two-sided, gold bookmark.
“Suspicion” is a book about the burden of consciousness.
It is also a book about cosmology, in that it begins with a “big bang” event and ends in a singularity.
This is most of what I know about the book right now, except that it contains many characters, the main ones being Evan, a man post- stroke who does not speak or walk, and a nurse, Joy, who befriends him. All of the characters in the book appear as fascinating and deep, but the book mimics life in that the people we wanted to be sympathetic are proved by their actions to be less so near the end, and as they contain the seeds of their own destruction, a cataclysm follows them, reminding us of our own cracks and foibles. So sympathy is reached nonetheless, but by another path altogether.
The book is an experiment and should be relatively annoying to read- but should produce a reward for patience. It may even be the kind of book people say they read, but never do, although I will try to include enough salaciousness to encourage people to read on even though they may find the book unpalatable. One can hardly expose the burden of consciousness without making a burdensome book.
The title comes from the suspicion people tend to feel about anyone different. This suspicion can be applied to children and other innocents in a quasi witch- hunt style throughout society. The most successful members of society know how to blend in, fit in and keep their heads down, to avoid suspicion. Suspicion builds to an inevitable violence, but, as in all my stories, violence has its own rhythm and clarity and brings to light new dimensions of the plot.
