Cheval de Guerre was from 1989- 1993 with several members. We went everywhere. Places like SanFrancisco and Ljubljana. I was always in the band and I wrote stuff.
This performance we actually played as "Valdys Unborn Children" which is a purely canadian "joke" and we went to Bergen, Norway and played at HULEN, I did a solo at Manefisken(we couldn't afford the train fares) in Oslo, and then we played York. Reg was always in the band, and unlike many incarnations of Cheval de Guerre, i loved these guys. We had one fan for sure, Troy Tate. Thanks for coming out, Troy.

Make the music as slow as you can Let’s drag these words out ‘till the day I’m tired of rest and I’m sick of this bed Before I was ready you started to say As Friends may go I may be gone. So every day I walk in the grass and lick my fingers clean of the dew I know I said I needed you to turn to -you got me wrong again I never really wanted to fall all I wanted was to be Friends may go I may be gone You were like the winter sun, casting shadows at fifty below full of blinding light and promises but as cold as night I never really wanted to warn you all I wanted was to be Friends may go I may be gone So every day I walk on the ice, the owls and chickadees follow me along I know I said I wanted to hear from you Got me wrong again I never really wanted your words All I wanted was to be Friends may go I may be Friends may go, I may be gone. Now all my friends are angry at you, they see what’s left of me When you turn away I’ve lain awake at night waiting for your kindness- it’s gone again I never really wanted to forgive you All I wanted ... Is gone... Make the music as slow as you can Let’s sing these words out ‘till the day I’m tired of rest and I want my sweet bed Before I was ready I started to say As friends may go, I may be gone.

The leaves are green the trees they are tall all those happy summer days are all past and gone and here I am alone on the coldest winter day he was young but daily were a growin' Oh father , dear father you've done to me much wrong for you have married me to a boy that is too young for I am twice twelve and he's only thirteen He's young, he daily are a growin' Oh daughter dear daughter I've done to you no wrong for I have married you to a rich farmers son and if you will but love him and treat him as your kin he's young, he daily are a ' growin' Oh the boys are in the field out playin' at a ball and my young lover is the flower of them all go tie a blue ribbon round about his neck for to let the other girls know he is married At the age of thirteen married man was he at the age of fourteen his first child was born at the age of sixteen on his grave the grass grows green And that has put an end to his growing.

Sweetgrass 03:38
Braid it not for you need not Braid it not for you need not Earth and heaven are the same place And neither are you divided Some of the grace of the wind that flows or a bird folding a piece of grass making a basket the wind to hold out of mud and pieces of plastic My own cruelty follows me long after the whole world's forgiven Those nights of ennui would have ruined me but for a drop of the kindness you gave But for a drop of your kindness and that you patiently suffered me you even suffered me gladly Dirt and water are kindness Dirt and water are kindness All of the animals walk in delight for the sake of dirt and water Rue it not for you need not Rue it not for you need not Earth and heaven are your hiding place And all among the tall grasses.

Come morning I'll be glad for what I've done I am the painter and the picture - we are one like rain that falls of sea-washed sand this day is never done come, the day. For too long have I suffered in the tombs of luxury where the body is as worthless and the soul can go to sleep I go now to the real world where the moon takes care of me Grandmother! I leave behind the factories I leave you with your farms I leave behind the prison with its hundred grasping arm I leave behind the public school to domesticate and maim and I leave you with your money it's like a ball and chain. I'm goin out to the real world where the moon takes care of me surrounded by my brother and sisters the trees they shelter and protect and they do not lie... I dreamt that in a city they forgot to cut the trees they forgot to mow the grass down, they forgot to kill the weeds and in one year of seasons that city was overgrown and in two years of seasons that city was all gone. My love has eyes like planets and a face just like the sun a voice as sweet as blackbirds when the new spring has come and the love that goes between us is not always human not... always so come along now pretty morning make me glad for what I've done I am the hunter and the hunted we are one Like the eye that sees and the eye that is blind this day is never done. Come, sweet night.

Pastorale 10:52
Coyotes are crying like somebody died and the wind is blowing the stars off course and there's mice in the traps and a nighthawk outside and the damn sky is blue as a broken heart and always just suspended just beyond my lonely poor heart and the mud is freezing under the turquoise sky which is just suspended beyond my eyes and the real is closer now the sky subsides... If I could just touch the surface of that silky sky... The buzzing flies sound like mens voices the ones that kill cows with electric devices the black flies sound like the old men coming to kill the spring cattle The rich will survive, the poor will perish They're glad to see we're keeping our faith the rich are glad we're keeping our faith it'll be that much longer until we awake.

I learned hope where there was no hope and I learned love where there was no love and you heard a voice where there was no voice But I hear only wailing... and the poor are a little quieter now and the artists all are sleeping and the sleep of reason produceth monsters* and all the monsters are weeping... In this modern world maybe despair is as close as we can come to hope and maybe death is as close as we will ever come to life and I hear a voice and it's wailing Like all newly dead people some are going to blame you but life without love is worthless and body grows tired and feeble and every song is a prophecy and every song comes true and I had a big black stolen mare and that's my only proof mercantile america has buried another great poet beneath the feet of the zombie sheep who never feel a thing but I feel... and everything hurts. spring has ushered in a new age of darkness where neither song nor word can breathe the hearts clenched tight as welfare cheque and the birds are dead on the wing the little birds... are dead on the wing... * Francisco Goya
